Religious discourse in modern Japan

This book is a translation of a text based on my doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology in 2010 under the title Kindai Nihon no shūkyō gensetsu to sono keifu: Shūkyō, kokka, shintō (The Genealogy of Religious Discourse in Modern Japan: Religion, State, Shintō); some revi-sions have been added. Some parts of this original manuscript were previously trans-lated and published, but the entire manuscript has been translated or revised newly for this book and edited for a broad readership in religious studies and Japanese studies.Since my enrollment at Tokyo University in 1988 I have received constant guidance from my dissertation supervisor Shimazono Susumu. Without having met Shimazono, I would probably have not advanced on the path of scholarship, and I am sincerely grateful to him. Critical comments on the dissertation were received during the oral examination from Hayashi Makoto of Aichi Gakuin University (who served on the examining committee), Katsurajima Nobuhiro of Ritsumeikan University, Tsuruoka Yoshio of the graduate school of Tokyo University, and Takagi Hiroshi of Kyoto University: they all provided opportunities for me to deepen my work and chart my way forward as a scholar. I hope to respond to their critiques as I continue to research, write, and teach about religion.
